Volume 42, Issue 1 KLL Newsletter By Bob Swab, President This letter represents the first monthly newsletter for the Kernersville Little League. This publication will be available on our web site at www.kll.org and through our email distribution mailing list. We’ve been hard at work in the off-season. As you may have heard, there will be many positive changes in our league this year. For starters, we have delegated much of the league’s work to committees. These committees will support every aspect of running our league from buildings and grounds to fundraising. See the web site for a complete listing of committee responsibilities and volunteers. Our coaches, umpires and volunteers make this organization strong. Did you know that Little League has more than 1 MILLION volunteers world-wide? There is nearly one volunteer for every three players. Over the next three years, we plan an aggressive agenda for improvement. Our three focus areas follow: 1. Improve what we do (better communication, consistent answers to questions and more volunteer responsibility) 2. Upgrade our facilities (Make the Swaim complex a place to be proud of!) 3. Expand our programs … Extended play, Super scrimmage, Middle School baseball and softball and bring back Big League Baseball You will hear more about each
of these focus areas throughout the year.
See you at the complex.

Buildings and Grounds: We had a great fall work day. We completed the following items during the day:
Other accomplishments include:
Sincere THANKS to all those who
helped. Equipment Committee: The equipment committee may have contacted you this fall. As you know, collecting equipment may never have been done in our 42 year history. This committee has really made it happen. They promise that you will receive your equipment back in tack this spring. This committee’s primary responsibility during the fall was to solicit bids for all equipment purchasing next year. By centralizing the purchasing of equipment, we were able to save the league more than $8,000 in the annual operating budget. As a result, Spring Fees will be all inclusive this year! That’s right – your spring fee will include the entire uniform cost. No more extra money to put lettering on the jersey or to buy the jersey. Suppliers for uniforms will have sizing samples at the board room during signups. This will include jerseys, pants and caps. Color selections for socks, belts and screen shirts will be available for manager final selection of color schemes. Fund Raising Committee: Þ Kernersville Little League will be selling Pizza kits and Krispy Kreme Doughnut discount cards for fund raising this season. Þ Picture vendor will be selected during January. Þ As is the case every year, a small group of new Sponsors are needed at various division levels. Please contact Pat McNamara @ 580-5608 or e-mail – pat@trs-sesco.com with any potential sponsor names and contacts. Managers Committee: Interviewing managers – What is this all about? Good coaches and managers are the back bone of Little League. We have established a committee this year to review each of the manager nominees before presentation to the League President and Board for approval. So far the process has been interesting and we believe very positive. Even returning managers have remarked that they like the fact that we are taking our children’s experience seriously. We appreciate your patience and would love to hear any feedback you may have.
We spent much time during the January Board Meeting reviewing local rule changes. I want to highlight a few proposed changes for the 2002 Season. 1. Little League pledge will be done prior to each game. 2. All minor/major baseball and major/senior softball games have a 1 hour and 45 minute time limit regardless of when they are played. 3. New tryout and draft process for coach pitch and minor softball. 4. Clarification on coach of record definition. 5. Pool of players for senior baseball and Big League. Pool used to select players to field team in the event one team does not have 9 players. 6. As is customary in all pre-game sports, managers /coaches are encouraged to hold a pre-game prayer expressing safety, fair play and good attitudes. We expect the proposed rules to be approved at the February board meeting. If you need a copy of the proposed rules or have comments, please email Barry Tilley at btilley@triad.rr.com. Barry is the chairmen of the rules committee.
To make this publication successful, we need your help. Over time we will establish a set format for this newsletter. Please email your stories of interest, recognition of volunteers, etc. to us at rswab@kll.org. I would like to have a regular section called Who’s who. Digital pictures are welcome! |
